UBUNTU
The African concept of Ubuntu, is simply lovely. It is a Nguni Bantu term that means ‘a universal bond that connects all humans’ or simply, just ‘humanity’.
The cultural concept came to life during mid-19th century and since then, has become an integral part of many African communities. It is said to be originated from a Zulu phrase ‘Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu‘ which translates to ‘a person is a person through other people’. How true is that! Have you ever really thought about it?
The Ubuntu philosophy teaches us to be more empathetic towards each other and that it is impossible to exist alone. Mulling over it, I realized that the theory is correct. Putting aside scientific reasons, every human need emotional bonding for their well-being. Be it a bond of mother and child, a close friendship or a magnetic pull towards a stranger, strong connections and familiar faces are to be cherished.
If you are thinking of adopting Ubuntu, you can start anywhere! Start being more empathetic to your doorman, put yourself in your boss’s shoes occasionally and try to understand why your toddler is such a monster sometimes.
Here is what the Guardian has to say about Ubuntu.
