I recently tried the Deng Jr Adjustable Brightness SAD Light Therapy Lamp, and overall, it delivers on its promise of bringing bright, UV-free light therapy into your daily routine. But, why choose this over other SAD Light Therapy Lamps.
The lamp is compact and stylish, making it easy to incorporate into any space, whether on a desk, bedside table and is neutral enough with its faux wood finish and linen cover to work with any home decor.
With adjustable brightness and color temperature settings, it caters to different preferences and needs, allowing you to customize your light therapy experience. The quality of light feels natural and pleasant, effectively mimicking daylight.
It also comes with a timer setting and remote controller and a USB port (Type A) to charge your device like smartphone or tablet. The onboard soft touch buttons are all you need to access the different settings but the remote control goes further read on to find out more.
This Lamp Looks Familiar
This lamp shares many similarities with other models, such as the Hiloshine Temperatures SAD Lamp, Voraiya SAD Light Therapy Lamp, OYADISIIOP Adjustable Light Therapy Lamp, Caromolly Sunlight Therapy Lamp, and Therapy Temperatures Brightness Spectrum Lamp. This is all thanks to drop shipping and resellers sharing the manufacturer.
They all offer adjustable brightness levels, sleek designs, and great build quality, making them perfect for any home, marrying lifestyle, tastes and interior designs. Apart from the brand label, different resellers offer small tweaks like colour options and lamp shade material options.
Like its counterparts, the Deng Jr lamp provides 10,000 lux brightness, which is ideal for combating symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), enhancing mood, and boosting energy levels during the darker months. You can find more about how SAD Light Therapy Lamps can brighten your mood and home in our earlier article.
While the design and functionality are impressive, that these lamps have similar user experiences across brands, making it more about personal aesthetic preference or brand loyalty if there is such a thing these days. The brand names that grace these lamps are so obscure and unknown to most that sometimes, all you really want to know is that they work well and deliver it did.
Table Lamp Design
A big part of choosing the Deng Jr or similar is for its design. For starters, it does not look like your conventional SAD lamp which are typically rectangular and flat light boxes propped up with a stand. The flat tablet like design would offer directional lighting for personal use while this is a bigger side table lamp with 360 degree surround lighting.
The modern and neutral design of the lamp blends right in with any decor and is perfect for any room. Ours sits in the study where we spend most of our day, but it will work just as well in the bedroom, on the sideboard in the hallway, in the living, dining or kitchen. You won’t exactly carry this around with you. For portability, consider those compact flat lamps instead.
Overall, this is an elegant and modern lamp with the light concealed throughout, including the bottom and top of the lamp shade stopping dust from getting in. If you are thinking of putting it on a shelf, side table or sideboard, the foot print is 12cm in diameter while the height is 30cm. The lamp shade is slightly bigger than the best at 13cm in diameter.
We choose a model with wood grain finish on the base and linen lamp shade. Other colour options for the base include black or gold while there is a white lamp shade also on offer.
Customisable Light Settings
Deng Jr SAD Light Therapy Lamp comes with adjustable brightness and colour temperature controls. This allows users to tailor their light therapy experience to their preferences and needs. Let’s start with the brightness setting. You can access this directly from the soft touch button on the base. Once turned on, long press on the power button to turn down or up the brightness. If it is dimming, lift your finger then long press the same button again to reverse the setting, making your lamp brighter. This control offers a stepless brightness control giving you full control of the brightness.
Next, we have the colour temperature. A dedicated button on the base lets you change the colour temperature from one of three colour choices, Warm White (WW 2700 to 3000K) , Nature White (NW 4000 to 4500K) or Cool White (CW 5500 to 6000K). My personal preference is Nature White but each to their own. You can cycle through the three different colour temperature by tapping on the button. A small niggle we found with this setting is that it jumps from Warm White to Cool White then Nature White when cycling through the settings. The latter is more of a cross between warm and cool and our brain is wired to expect Warm, Nature then Cool over Warm, Cool then Nature. This is resolved using the remote which we will look at later.
If you are unsure which colour temperature to use, the Warm White is for winding down and relaxing, perfect for the living room or between. The Nature White is for reading and working on the computer, perfect for the study and the Cool White is for those cloudy days and late or early sunrise and sunset where you just need that extra boost. Cool White would also be the light temperature if you are using this lamp for Light Therapy.
Multi-Functional Use
The modern table lamp doubles as stylish ambient lighting lamp when not in use for therapy. The ability to transition from therapeutic to decorative makes it a more versatile investment compared to traditional light boxes, which are purely for therapy. You can change the brightness and colour temperature to suit if you need to wind down in the evening. Or if you wish to use it as a work light in the study, turn it back up. But, be sure not to push the brightness way up in the evening or you might have trouble sleeping.
Another useful feature is the USB charging port. It allows one to charge their device conveniently by the bedside. The port
Remote Control Does More
There are things that the remote control does that the onboard soft touch button doesn’t and vice versa. Here is a list we compiled:
- The remote lets you set or unset 10 min, 30 min, 40 min or 90 min timers with a press of a button. The soft touch button on the base only lets you set or unset the 60 min timer.
- The remote lets you select Warm White, Nature White or Cool White colour temperature with dedicated buttons while you need to cycle through the colour temperature using the soft touch control on the base.
- The remote lets you choose between 25, 50, 75 or 100% with the toggle up or down buttons while long pressing the power button achieves stepless brightness control from low to 100%.
- Finally, the on/off button which simply lets you power on or off the unit.
It is also worth noting that this is a good size remote with tactile buttons. This is ideal for those with big fingers or more distance between the buttons to strike the right one. I would take this any day over small remotes offered with fairy lights that are often too small and fiddly. The remote runs on button battery.
Our Experience
We do not find looking at the light jarring. There are reviews of other SAD lamps that complain of feeling uneasy or uncomfortable if looking directly at the lamp. We do not feel this way even with the highest 10000 lux brightness setting. This is easily attributed to our chosen lampshade finish, Linen which softens an otherwise pure white light.
Affordable Options
While some traditional light boxes come with premium price tags, many compact adjustable lamps are budget-friendly, providing an accessible entry point for those new to light therapy. If you’re looking for an affordable, effective light therapy solution, the Deng Jr lamp, as well as its similar counterparts, is a solid choice. It might not stand out dramatically among competing models, but it gets the job done without breaking the bank. Perfect for anyone starting with light therapy or seeking a stylish addition to their daily routine.
